Thane, I had an interesting experience I forgot to tell you about
when I was on my trip with Mike. It was at a movie theater.

OK. I've got a few minutes. Tell me what happened. Did you find gum
under your seat?

No, but that's disgusting.
While we were watching the movie I noticed Mike and I were
reacting differently to many parts of the movie. Then I realized that
many other Japanese tourists were doing the same as me.

Yeah, I've noticed that too when I go to some movies, especially
comedies. Sometimes the humor doesn't translate well because of
cultural reasons.

Well, we saw an adventure movie, so that wasn't a problem.

Did the movie have subtitles, or was it only in English?

It was in English, so that might have been one problem. But Mike and
I physically reacted differently. To give an example, I was very surprised, when the
main character fell into the river, but Mike wasn't touched at all.

That is interesting. I wonder why your expectations were so different.
In Japan, sometimes I'm the only one laughing at parts of movies,
it's a little embarrassing.

Mike and I talked about it after the movie. He didn't even realize
what was going on.

Well, at least you are learning to enjoy your differences. I think the
key to any relationship is accepting each other for who you are.

アメリカのアカデミー賞って、なんで「オスカー」って言うの？
Academy AwardsのOscarは、受賞者がもらうあのトロフィーのことなんだ。
アカデミー賞の事務局の人が、あの像を見て「私のオスカーおじさんにそっくり！」って言ったことから
そう名付けられたんだってよ
本当のところはわからないけどね。


アメリカでは、みんな映画館でどんなふうに映画を見るんですか？
まず、ポップコーンを買う。それも、すっごく大きいやつ。
日本人が見たらバケツみたいって言うよね。

そういえば、映画とかで見たことあるような気がします。
それから、日本の映画館って普通シーンと静まり返っているけれど、
アメリカ人は怒ったり泣いたリ笑ったり、
とにかくリアクションが大きいんだ

そういうところって、普段から日本人と違いますよね。
それに、面白い映画だと終わったときに拍手が起こったりするね。
観客が一緒になってワーッと拍手して歓声を上げるところが、ちょっとコンサートみたいっていうか、
そういうのが楽しくて映画館に行く人もいるよね。

セインさんは、どんな映画が好きなんですか？
僕は色々な映画が好きです。そもそも映画とうのは、僕にとってエンタテインメントですから、基本的には何でも好きなんですけれど。一番好きなのはコメディーとか、アクションとか、SFXとか。そういった系のものが、大好きです。
